Priority School Building Programme

The Government’s £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) is rebuilding and refurbishing school buildings in the worst condition across the country. There are two phases of the programme covering a total of 537 schools. Direct Access as the leading education access consultancy has been working with architects on several different plans under this scheme.

Priory Fields Primary School is one such example. On a challenging hillside site, the school is now benefiting from accessible premises after Direct Access worked with the architects and builders Portakabin.

The new £7.5m two-storey modular structure replaced the previous building at Astor Avenue, Dover and provided new hard play and nature areas for students. Built by Portakabin at their manufacturing plant in York, it consisted of 44 modules to create classrooms, offices and a double height multi-purpose hall. More info can be found at this link –

The school was developed in close collaboration with teaching staff to ensure ventilation and natural light were key features. The two-story building has extensive informal areas for learning, excellent opportunities for supervision and full access to the outside for disabled students.

Direct Access education team include architectural degree and NRAC certified staff who all have a disability. This provides an inherent expertise and understanding backed by over 900 schools, colleges and Universities who use Direct Access. To learn more about the access audits for schools click here.
